British School Visit

My partner and I are now half-way through our two month UK journey and we have arrived in Leicester. I have been attending a school here and am having a fabulous time helping out in all of the year levels of the primary school.

One of the activities that I have been engaged with is the Year 5 cooking club, and they've asked me to teach them how to make 'something Australian'. I thought that lamingtons would be a great idea, and so that's exactly what happened yesterday.

I started the session with a brief history lesson on lamingtons and how they came to be one of Australia's favourite afternoon tea treats. The children were fascinated and confessed that they had never tried the delicious, coconutty sweet. I then modelled the making of lamingtons from the sponge cutting stage to the rolling in coconut stage, and along the way included some safety teaching in regards to allergies and knife-handling,

For the students, some staff helpers assisted me in setting up stations for the chidlren to make their lamingtons, and after a lot of mess, fun and kitchen-chaos, the children each made about four lamingtons fingers each. They enjoyed some together at school and shared the rest with their families.
