Year 1 Handwriting Lesson
The image below depicts a handwriting lesson that I taught with Year 1 students in a Perth primary school. The students were familiar with a regular handwriting routine which consisted of learning the letter at the mat and watching me write the letter on dotted thirds, and whilst I modelled, I often wrote the letters incorrectly to demonstrate common mistakes or problems with letter formation. The children loved seeing me write the letters incorrectly and would scream out in disapproval. We enjoyed 'marking' my letters too as the children felt that they got to wear the teacher's hat and give constructive feedback about my writing. After this initial mat session, the children would practise the handwriting in their workbooks back at their desks.
